Backing Up the Internet
We have been receiving a lot of email lately about the information apocalypse, which deals with the internet crashing or the internet disappearing completely. While we doubt that this will ever happen, some people want to be on top of things in case this ever does. We don't blame you! Yes, people want a backup of the internet. This may sound like a joke, but, it's for real.
What good is the internet if it disappears? It's not like anyone is archiving the entire internet as we speak. That's why we have written this quick guide on how to back up the internet with the beginner in mind. Before we get started, make sure you have the necessary items to complete this task. You will need a computer, an internet and some floppy disks.
First, you will need to get to the command prompt. The command prompt was made specifically for backing up the internet. It doesn't do much else. You can reach the command prompt by clicking the start button and selecting run. When the run screen comes up, type cmd. If you are not using Windows 2000 or XP, you can find the command prompt or MS-DOS prompt under the program menu.
The command prompt will be a black screen. If you have made it this far, you're almost halfway there! Don't give up! Now, we need to get into the C drive or make sure we are there already, so, type c: and press enter. Place a floppy disk in your floppy drive. Now, type the following in the prompt.
backup.exe /all -internet a:
This will begin the backup onto floppy disks, you are all finished! Floppy disks are the most efficient place to store plenty of data, that's why we used them for the backup of the internet. Just make sure you insert a new floppy disk after a few minutes or so. I recommend every 3 minutes since the computer will not warn you that the disk is almost or completely full. This tutorial will work only for Windows.
The good news is if you use a Linux, Unix or Sun operating system, you don't have to worry about backing up the internet because it already comes preinstalled on each machine! Unfortunately, Macs can't access the internet at the moment, but, Apple is apparently working hard on that item. I hoped this helped and you are well on your way to having your very own backup of the internet!

Hi. This didn’t work for me and I really need a backup of the internet because my sister needs a copy installed on her computer because she doesn’t have the internet because AOL only lets you have one user online at a time, so, could you please provide a more thorough explanation on backing up the internet without using command prompt because I can’t figure out how to work it.
Thanks,
Roger

Hi Roger,
There is a multitude of other ways to complete this task. To begin, you will still need to get into the command prompt. Do some searching online on how to accomplish that. Secondly, if the backup doesn’t work, try typing this command first in the command prompt.
fix.exe /everything -internet -backup c:This will fix any problems that you would have backing up the internet. Then just continue with the instructions above and you will be well on your way to backing up the internet!

Hi, there. Since you seem to be some kind of a technical guru, or maybe more, I was wondering if there was an additional command that would allow me to back-up the entire universe with the exception of George W Bush ? It seems that the regular solution “fix.exec/vote - kerry d:” didn’t work properly last time, so I’m looking for an emergency computer spell, if available.
Thanks in advance,
SL

Hi Saint_Lunaire,
Are you sure you are storing the backup information of the universe on floppy disks? That could be one potential issue. Also, you could also try this at the command prompt.
expose.exe /bush -corruption -hypocrisy d:Then try the backup again. I haven’t tested this as I’m not sure it will work, but, in theory it should. It really also depends on the storage capacity of the average human being backed up. If this is small, it probably won’t take. If you know what I mean.
Hope I offered some assistance. Good luck.

mv -R /home/liberalhippies /dev/null
I think this is the more appropriate command

Hmm… so you want to try in Unix commands then? I’m not sure if that will work my friend. Maybe you should try this below.
mv -R /home/neoconservatives /nazi/germanySuddenly, the entire midwest disappears.

i agree with you NEOCONS are going crazy. I didnt suggest bush stay. I just suggested that liberal hippies goto /dev/null Its much nicer for them in there, a little closer to the socialist utopia they love so much

“Floppy disks are the most efficient place to store plenty of data”
I’m detecting sarcasm here

Wow! this is the most efficent command ever!!! I only had to use 40 million floppy disks also this command works to:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“deltree /internet -now”
Nate, nice work. I’ll probably test this out tomorrow on a couple internets that I come across (and have already downloaded of course).
Cheers.
i find theres an easier way. for this you will need a fresh install of windows 95 with MSIE. there will be a little icon on the desktop labeled “The Internet.” just cut that from the desktop, insert a blank floppy disk, navigate to the floppy, and paste. backing up the internet windows style.
somehow good ol’ billy found out how to compress the internet back then.
Comment by Shotz — 7/16/05 @ 4:32 am
Shotz, I normally don’t compress, but, I’ve heard some great things about it from some internet buddies that I have. This new, more efficient way seems to be a lot more user friendly. I think I’ll give it a shot on my Windows 3.1 build, I never got around to installing 95 yet.
Should you be fortunate enough to be as internet savvy as I am, you might have Windows 98 installed. With this, you can compress the internet using Winzip, then compress that file using WinRar. Once this is done, you can compress the WinRar file once again with WinZip into a self extracting file, then compress that file with WinAce. Once you get all of the air out of the internets with this compression technique, you can download them to a USB drive. Remember, if you do not click ’safely remove hardware’ icon before taking the USB drive out of your computer, all of the files will decompress causing your USB drive to explode, spilling every single file from the internets all over your house. If this should happen, you can go to command line and type this:
format house:
This erase all computer files from your house. However, should your USB drive explode in your office, you will need to install a copy of Office in order to format your office.
I learned all of this from some dude.
Im downloading the internet on to my 200 exabyte “liberated” DOD/CIA server. It taken me so far: 5 years 123 days 19 hours 28 minutes 47 seconds… and counting. It will never finish because the internet is always being updated. I have most of the internet in my 20th sub-level secret lab.
