Vinny Silverstein is no stranger to the underground scene of Polka. “Yeah, I’ve been DJing Polka for about 8 years now,” said Vinny. Vinny’s DJ name is Polkahontas and he is well know for his extremely underground, dark and heavy selection of Polka. He told us a little bit about the scene and his growing disdain for it. “Back about 10 years, in the early days of underground polka, the scene was way more relaxed. It was just starting to get good… and… you know… people were really nice to one another.” Vinny blames the slow commercialization of Polka and the new scene whores ruining the vibe. “We call them polkalists. Fuck polkalists. They are just way too scene for me,” whimpered Vinny.

“I can’t even find any good records anymore. I swear, the producers of this genre are totally stuck in 1998. We started calling this stuff Two-4-Step, and it seems that no one has grown out of the phase. I’m just sick of it!” Vinny told us. “I mean, we just need to get back to our roots… freshen things up a bit. I’m not a producer, but I would sure as hell push it in the clubs if it’s experimental Polka or just something new.” Thomas, who would not give us his last name, is the master of ceremonies (MC) for Vinny. His stage name is MC Clogstep and he also is beginning to dislike the whole ordeal. “The worst are the haters. How can you get a crowd going when everybody is so critical about the Polka selection and the mixing? These people just sit there and talk down about the music, why do they even come to the shows at all?” Thomas said.

Later on in our thorough discussion about the underground Polka scene, Vinny told us, “We need a change from all of this. I’m thinking about spinning other different styles… I never thought I would say that 5 years ago! I’ve been listening to a lot of emocore-esque experimental clownstep. I think this is what we have been looking for.” We told Vinny about how scene the emo kids are nowadays and he began to cry. Hard. We think he’ll fit right in.
