Sarah Admits Over Exaggeration of Internet Speak
LOL. LMAO. ROTFL. All common expressions to convey laughter over the internet. We've grown to love them. We use them a lot. What happens when people stop using these acronyms in the correct context? Sarah Bennett, internet surfer, admitted yesterday to a survey that she doesn't actually laugh when typing LOL. "I never really found anything on the internet that funny... or at least worth laughing out loud over," Sarah confided. "It's definitely an over exaggeration on my part. When I type ROTFLMAO, at best I chuckle just a little. LOL to me is more like a heh," she told us.
Even more shocking, the growing dull association between laughing and typing LOL has begun to change her real laughing patterns. Sarah told us, "My friend was telling me a joke the other day. It wasn't really that funny, but, I should have laughed at least a little. I said, the letters, L-O-L. Out loud. He looked at me really weird after that. I tried to explain to him the relevancy and irony of the situation, but, he couldn't understand. I think it's because he uses a Mac; those computers really can't access the internet."
We told Sarah that possibly substituting "heh" for every time she uses LOL could curb the issue. Sarah then said, "Your Mom can curb the issue. God I love pretzels." She began snacking on some tasty looking pretzels. Yes, Sarah didn't want us to help her alleviate the problem. We hope this problem doesn't spread and spiral out of control: could you imagine what the internet would be like if people lied all the time?!

I’ve been on the Internet since about 1990 and I still haven’t learned all the stinking acronyms. It’s ridiculous. There are enough general acronyms in society without having to learn a whole subset for on-line chatting. That’s why I learned to type really f**king fast. On the topic of laughing out loud, I did do it ONCE. Just once. At least while chatting on the Internet.

I’m so ashamed. I used to use acronyms.
But all that changed the day I too said “lol” and suddenly came to my senses. I still have a sneaking fondness for WTF but I’d rather just type the whole thing and to hell with people’s sensitive eyes. What the fuck! What the fuck! See? How hard is that to type?
About people lying on the internet, please don’t shatter the illusion. Because somewhere, right now, some yahoo thinks he’s actually being chatted to by an off-duty Victoria’s Secret girl wearing some scandalously scanty lingerie and a big collagen-pouffed smile.
